MES Summer School: the Complete Program for Model-Based Development of Embedded Systems
The second MES Summer School for model-based software development will take place from June 11 to 15, 2018, at the Michelberger Hotel in Berlin.
The MES Summer School on Introduction to Model-based Software Development offers participants a compact entry into model-based software development and quality assurance. The five-day training program is aimed at software developers of embedded systems who already work in model-based development or are planning a switch from code-based to model-based development. The Summer School will also provide an introduction to developing and safeguarding safety-critical software models in compliance with standards such as ISO 26262, ISO 250xx, or ASPICE. This year, participants will also have the opportunity to attain the SAE Certificate of Competency by passing an evaluation exercise.
The complete program for getting started with and switching to MBD
The MES Summer School program will present participants with a comprehensive and practical guide to model-based software development and quality assurance, including requirements elicitation and management and defining architecture and model structure. Special focus will be placed on static and dynamic quality assurance methods.
By connecting theory with practice, the MES Summer School will see participants face typical challenges of modeling safety-critical systems already during the training workshop. As a result, they will be well prepared when applying their newly acquired knowledge to their own projects after the Summer School. Thematic introductions will be followed by explanations as well as the use of tools in practical applications and discussions; the latter will be carried out directly on an example project during the hands-on sessions. Beyond this, participants will be given practical recommendations for modeling and safeguarding their models according to standards such as ISO 250xx, ISO 26262, and ASPICE. Additionally, participants can also achieve the SAE Certificate of Competency by passing an evaluation exercise.
The MES Summer School leisure program offers participants the opportunity to exchange ideas and network, all while getting to know Berlin. Participants will explore the Berlin district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, experience culinary highlights at the Whiskey Room in the Michelberger Hotel and at Butterhandlung, and watch the opening game of the FIFA World Cup together.
Michelberger Hotel, where the MES Summer School will be held, is located centrally at the Warschauer Bridge and is easy to get to via public transport. The hotel is near the East Side Gallery and lies in the center of the hip nightlife district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, making it the perfect starting point for a lively leisure program.
Concentrated learning in small groups
The group size will be limited to 20 participants. This will allow the speakers to provide individual supervision. The experienced team of speakers, a relaxed atmosphere, and an appealing leisure program will ensure that the participants have ample time to exchange with each other and with the speakers.
The MES Summer School is equally suited to both developers switching from code-based to model-based development and beginners in model-based development. The workshop is designed for developers, testers, project managers, and team leaders whose focus is safeguarding safety-critical embedded software. The MES Summer School is also suitable for industry personnel, as well as for academic staff from universities and technical colleges. Only basic modeling knowledge with Simulink® and Stateflow® is assumed.

The participation cost for the entire event is € 2,950 plus VAT per participant. This cost includes accommodation at the hotel and participation in the leisure program organized by MES. The first 12 participants to book will stay at the Michelberger Hotel. Additional participants will stay at a hotel that is within walking distance of Michelberger Hotel. Rooms will be allocated according to the order in which registrations are made. Participants who wish to attain the SAE Certificate of Competency must pay an additional fee of € 400 and take part in an evaluation exercise. An early bird discount of 10% is available on registrations made before March 31, 2018. An additional 25% discount is available for companies that register more than one participant at the same time or that register for another training workshop from the MES Training Program 2018. The cost for university and academic personnel is € 980 plus VAT.
