Industrial manufacturing is steadily becoming digitalized, thanks to Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things. Within this field, SMEs in particular must invest an increasing amount of effort (especially in software development) to produce customer-specific automation solutions for Industry 4.0 applications, and they operate under ever greater time pressure. In addition to safeguarding the safety of the automation solution as a whole, industrial standards on functional safety require that components and subsystems also be safeguarded. Due to the individual nature of customer-specific solutions, an off-the-rack safety concept is not effective here. The necessary safeguarding cannot be implemented economically via current methods – with these, the effort required to safeguard safety doubles. SAFE4I will significantly accelerate the development of functionally safe software. As part of this, all necessary software parts will be considered so as to achieve customer-specific automation solutions for Industry 4.0 applications.
